Artisan

Jumna Khan is a 38-year-old appliqué artisan based in Pipili, Puri district, Odisha. He began learning the craft at the age of 20 through family-based training in traditional chandua making, continuing a practice shaped through generational transmission and long-term engagement with appliqué production. His work combines hand and machine-assisted processes, using fabrics, scissors, needles, and sewing machines as part of a hybrid production system that responds to contemporary market demands. While rooted in the visual language of traditional appliqué, his practice extends beyond strictly ritual contexts into decorative and utilitarian objects intended for wider circulation. His products include appliqué lamps, decorative textiles, umbrellas, and customised craft objects designed for domestic and commercial use. Over the years, he has participated in workshops, seminars, and training programmes connected to craft development and artisan networks. His work has circulated through exhibitions and market platforms across Odisha, Delhi, and other regional craft events, reflecting an active engagement with broader handicraft economies. Through these networks, his products have reached both domestic and wider commercial audiences, including online and institutional platforms. His practice also reflects a broader shift within Pipili’s appliqué tradition, where artisans increasingly negotiate between hereditary craft knowledge and contemporary market expectations. Alongside ongoing challenges related to raw material costs, competition, tourism fluctuations, and infrastructural constraints, his work demonstrates an effort to sustain the craft through adaptation, diversification, and expanded modes of circulation.
