Sibdas Sengupta is an artist, curator and researcher whose practice interrogates representation, material politics and socio-historical inquiry. Spanning painting, installation, text and curatorial frameworks, his work focuses deeply on postcolonial memory and archival absence. As a facilitator, Sengupta emphasises pedagogy, process-oriented research and critical discourse, prioritising long-term engagement and the creation of sustainable artistic ecosystems outside traditional metropolitan centres.

Sengupta has been an integral part of the Odisha Craft Odyssey (OCO) since its inception, serving as the curator and editor for all of its editions. Within this framework, he co-curated the inaugural edition of Odisha Craft Odyssey in 2024 alongside Premjish Achari and Julius Das, and independently curated the second edition, The Popular Pipli, focusing on appliqué work at the Lalit Kala Regional Centre, Bhubaneswar in 2025. He is also steering the forthcoming third edition of OCO, which explores the Dhokra craft tradition. Parallel to his exhibition making, Sengupta has co-edited OCO’s vital bi-lingual research publications, including Kansa: Forging Traditions, Shaping Futures (2025) and Chandua: Canopies of Labour (2026).

His curatorial vision for OCO actively dismantles the rigid binaries between Art and Craft. Grounded in a decolonial approach, Sengupta treats craft traditions as fertile sites for the production of knowledge, unearthing vernacular histories that have historically been sidelined by gendered, political and institutional hierarchies. By adopting ethnographic methodologies rooted in deep research, collaboration and community participation, his practice shifts the exhibition format away from a passive display of objects toward a generative, knowledge-producing process. This framework aims to locate Odisha within the larger global ecosystem of contemporary practice, not through a romanticised lens, but by defining an Odia aesthetics as an active, conscious and political choice rooted firmly in the region's cultural soil.

Beyond his extensive work with OCO, Sengupta has curated a diverse portfolio of landmark exhibitions across India. In 2026, he curated The Long Now of Us, the historic first solo presentation of acclaimed artist Jagannath Panda in his hometown of Bhubaneswar, presented by EO Odisha at the Lalit Kala Academy Regional Centre. His extensive work with Gallery Dotwalk includes curating Deep Interiors: A Return to the (Un)Discovered Self (2025), a major intergenerational group exhibition of 34 modern masters and contemporary artists at the State Art Gallery, Hyderabad, as well as serving as Assistant Curator alongside R. Siva Kumar for the landmark exhibition The Inner Contour: A.A. Raiba (2025) at the Travancore Palace, New Delhi. He has also championed emerging and solo practices, curating the Art Centrix Space ACS Grant shortlist exhibitions Expanded Disciplinarity: Chapter II – Edges of Encounter (2025) and Constructing Painterly Relations (2024), alongside solo presentations such as Hemant Gavankar’s Magic Erase (2025) and Priyaranjan Purkait’s The Will to Live (2024).

Sengupta holds a Master of Fine Arts from Shiv Nadar University (2019) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from B.K. College of Art and Crafts, Bhubaneswar (2017). Through his dual roles as a cultural practitioner and institutional strategist, he continues to contribute significantly to contemporary dialogues surrounding institutional critique, knowledge production and regional art histories.
