The OCO fellows embarked on an immersive journey of learning, adaptation, and discovery—one that was as enriching as it was insightful. What started with excitement and challenges soon evolved into a meaningful exploration of Kantilo’s rich artisanal heritage, culminating in significant milestones.

The expedition began with thorough preparation, strategic coordination, and an introduction to the OCO vision and mission. Prakash played a crucial role in bridging the initial interactions between our fellows and the local community, laying the groundwork for an engaging exchange of knowledge. As the team navigated the village’s traditional workspaces, they observed the artisans’ craftsmanship—while brass (pital) had become the predominant medium, a few skilled elderly craftsmen still practised the rare art of working with bell metal.

The journey took a pivotal turn as they reached Khalisahi, a village historically renowned for its bell metal artistry. Though the majority of artisans had transitioned to brass work, a few families remained dedicated to preserving this fading craft within their homes. This experience provided invaluable insights into the perseverance required to sustain such a tradition in changing times.

The final day was one of deep reflection and achievement. Our fellows visited the homes of artisans, listening to their stories and learning about the history of bell metal craftsmanship from the old masters and their families—many of whom, including women, continue to contribute to the craft even today. With mentor Anadi Sahoo guiding the study, the expedition concluded by evening, leaving the team with a profound appreciation for the artisans' resilience and dedication.

This journey through Kantilo was more than just an exploration—it was a tribute to a centuries-old craft and the artisans who keep its legacy alive.
