Kabita Das is a 50-year-old appliqué artisan based in Uaril, Cuttack district, Odisha. She began learning the craft at the age of 20 through generational transmission, acquiring her skills through observation, repetition, and sustained engagement with materials within the household and community environment. Her practice reflects inherited knowledge systems shaped through everyday labour while also adapting to changing market conditions and contemporary modes of production. Working primarily with textiles, thread, needles, and hand-based stitching techniques, her appliqué practice is closely connected to everyday domestic life. The objects produced within her workshop include home décor items, screen doors, bed mattresses, and other functional textile forms that move between utility and decoration. Unlike craft traditions tied directly to ritual economies, her work remains embedded within local systems of everyday use and regional circulation. Economically, her livelihood is sustained through local markets as well as exhibitions and craft fairs that extend the visibility of her work beyond the immediate community. At the same time, her practice continues to negotiate challenges linked to material scarcity, fluctuating demand, market competition, and shifting generational interest in craft-based livelihoods. Her sustained engagement with the craft reflects both continuity and adaptation, shaped by decades of labour and a commitment to transmitting knowledge to younger generations within changing social and economic conditions.
