Appliqué artisan

Trinath Mohapatra is a 63-year-old appliqué artisan based in Pipili, Puri district, Odisha. He began learning the craft at the age of 10 through family-based training in traditional chandua making. His practice engages with ritual, festival, and daily-use objects, produced using appliqué fabrics, thread, and mirror work. The tools and techniques remain consistent with earlier generations, reflecting a continuity of manual processes within the craft. His work is primarily distributed through local markets, while also extending to platforms such as the Surajkund Mela. His practice continues to be shaped by material shortages, competitive pressures, and broader shifts in labour, including reduced participation from younger generations.
