Abhaya Kumar Moharana is a 62-year-old appliqué artisan based in Bhakarsahi, Banamalipur, Khordha district, Odisha. He began learning the craft within a hereditary framework, acquiring knowledge through continuous involvement in household production practices from an early age. His work reflects decades of experience shaped by repetition, manual precision, and close familiarity with materials and techniques. Using textiles, thread, needles, and hand-based stitching processes, his practice is centred around functional and decorative appliqué objects used within domestic spaces. Unlike temple-oriented craft systems tied directly to ritual economies, the appliqué traditions practiced in this region are closely linked to everyday life and local patterns of use. His livelihood depends on local markets, state-supported craft outlets such as Utkalika, and participation in exhibitions and fairs. Over the years, his work has received recognition through various honours and public presentations, reflecting his long-standing contribution to the craft tradition.
