Bharat Meher is a forty-year-old textile applique artisan based in Botupali, Boudh district, Odisha. He began learning the craft during childhood through family apprenticeship, self-learning and community mentorship, acquiring skills through observation and sustained engagement with materials. Working primarily with textiles, thread and mirrors and tools such as sewing machine and needles, his practice reflects inherited knowledge alongside adaptations developed over time. The craft holds cultural and social significance within its community and is closely tied to ritual such as use of chandua, ceremonial use such as Danda yatra Chottri, or everyday use, shaped by local resources and seasonal rhythms. Economically, Bharat Meher sustains his livelihood through local markets, collectives, intermediaries while negotiating challenges such as material scarcity, market pressures, cost metrics or customer preference. His work has been presented at district level exhibitions/fairs. Committed to the continuity of the tradition, he emphasizes the importance of transmitting skills and knowledge to younger generations while responding to contemporary conditions.
