Kamala Kumari Mishra is a 73-year-old appliqué artisan based in Mishrasahi, Puri district, Odisha. She began learning the craft at the age of 25 through close observation and long-term engagement with materials and processes within her neighbourhood environment. Unlike strictly hereditary transmission, her learning emerged through proximity and community-based exchange, particularly under the guidance of Purna Chandra Mishra, a State Design Awardee and her neighbour, whose practice played a formative role in shaping her understanding of appliqué work. Working primarily with textiles, thread, needles, and hand-stitching techniques, her practice reflects a deep familiarity with traditional chandua making and related appliqué forms associated with Puri’s craft traditions. Her work moves across decorative, domestic, and ritual contexts, sustaining the visual vocabulary and manual precision associated with older forms of appliqué production in the region. Over the course of her career, her contribution to the craft has been recognised through several honours, including the State Award Merit in 1999. Her practice reflects decades of sustained labour and engagement with appliqué traditions at a time when changing market structures, mechanisation, and shifting generational interests continue to reshape the craft landscape. Through her work, she remains part of a longer continuum of artisan knowledge sustained through neighbourhood networks, observation-based learning, and lived practice.
