Niranjan Meher is a 40-year-old textile applique artisan based in Butupali, Boudh district, Odisha. They began learning the craft at the age of seven through family apprenticeship, acquiring skills through observation and sustained engagement with materials. Working primarily with textiles and tools such as sewing machines and needles, his practice reflects inherited knowledge alongside adaptations developed over time. The craft holds cultural and social significance within its community and is closely tied to ritual, ceremonial, or everyday use, shaped by local resources and seasonal rhythms. Economically, Niranjan Meher sustains his livelihood through local markets. Collectives, intermediaries while negotiating challenges such as material scarcity, market pressures, and customer preference. His work has been presented at exhibitions/fairs in the district. Committed to the continuity of the tradition, they emphasize the importance of transmitting skills and knowledge to younger generations while responding to contemporary conditions.
