Jagannath Moharana is a 35-year-old appliqué artisan based in Bhakarsahi, Banamalipur, Khordha district, Odisha. He learned the craft through family-based transmission, developing his skills through observation and long-term engagement within household production environments. His practice reflects inherited knowledge systems shaped through repetition, labour, and intergenerational learning. Working with textiles, thread, and hand-based stitching techniques, he produces appliqué objects intended for everyday domestic use, including decorative and functional household textiles. His work reflects the regional character of appliqué traditions in Khordha, where craft production often exists outside large ritual economies and remains closely tied to local forms of living and utility. His livelihood is sustained through local markets, Utkalika, and regional exhibitions and fairs. At the same time, his practice continues to negotiate challenges linked to material shortages, changing consumer demands, and the declining participation of younger generations in hereditary craft occupations. His work reflects the persistence of regional craft knowledge within shifting social and economic conditions.
